Dr. Shi-He Liu is Associate Professor in the Department of Cell and Cancer Biology at The University of Toledo College of Medicine and Life Sciences. Therapies for pancreatic cancer are largely hindered by the lack of an effective delivery system. Applied nanotechnology has revolutionized the field of cancer therapeutics, with immense potential owing to recent advances in nanoparticle (NP)-based drug and small-molecule delivery systems. Dr. Liu's laboratory focuses on nanodelivery systems, using state-of-the-art technologies to develop an innovative smart exosome nanocarrier capable of overcoming the obstacles currently limiting effective nanodelivery in cancer biology. The research advances a safe, efficient, and stable nanodelivery system that actively targets pancreatic cancer while minimizing clearance by the mononuclear phagocytic system (MPS). Building on the lab's earlier work in early detection and treatment of pancreatic cancer, Dr. Liu's team is applying this delivery platform to two goals: delivering a highly sensitive diagnostic biomarker for early pancreatic cancer detection, and delivering a combination of FDA-approved drugs (simvastatin, digoxin, and metformin) for BIRC5-targeted therapy. These projects hold substantial translational potential for cancer diagnosis and therapy.​
